Using Chatroom as a tool for supporting English Teaching

Since July 2006 I have been working with a new project on Avatars and Chatterbots all this to aim at the idea of using these virtual characters in a chatroom area to encourage the use of English language and check people's competence in using English as a second language for studying or training. Supported by Pandorabots and Media Semantics and a Chilean Telecommunication Company, which wants to be anonymous for the time being, I have just planted a core idea: introduce this new virtual tool in English Training or as support for Chilean students of English as a second language in Highschool and College level in the southern institutions .
In this new challenge, I have been studying AIML (Artificial Intelligence Mark Language) artificial and enrolled with virtual images supported by Oddcast, in a second stage these characters will include chat voice and better animation techniques. I christened my first Chatbot Character as my little daughter's name: AMAYA and a second character is coming soon to work with my highschool students from Castro city, at Liceo Francisco Coloane. LA CUECA: the National Chilean Dance style.

As we exchanged work, parts of our lives willingly, ideas, problems, proposals, money bills and coins, food recipes, projects, and cultural national background such as: dressing, proverbs and language contests, songs, some delicatessen sweets, books, and dances. Well, we presented our National Dance during the cultural evening in Busan City, South Korea, unfortunately we didn't take the customary suit and dress for our dancing couples. When dancing La Cueca, the male partner is named El Huaso and the female partner is named La China. They both wear their traditional garments including a long white handkerchief each one. So Leo was El Huaso, and Marcela was La China and made a nice couple for dancing La Cueca. Have a look at this short video performed by national couple of Cueca dancing. La Cueca is taught at schools in both levels due to a School National La Cueca dancing Contest every year.

There you can see Chilean Alcobs at work during our expositions presented during English Summer Town 2007 event of the Ministry of Education, where we showed our experiences as new Alcob Trainees and our participation in the Apec e-learning Training Program in November 2006. We exposed topics related with: Apec and Chile's participation, PBL approach, E-learning and ICTs practical tools in the classroom, PBL workshop, IPTV resource, and Korean culture and Apec cultural projects.
